How is the Purity of Gold Measured?

The purity of gold is measured using the karat system. In it's purest form, gold is 24Kt. Most jewelry in the U.S. is sold in either 18Kt, 14Kt or 10Kt purity. Very simply, gold is usually alloyed (mixed) with other metals such as copper or nickel. This makes the gold more durable for jewelry use by hardening the gold. As an example, 14Kt gold jewelry is about 58.5% pure, meaning 58.5% of the piece is pure gold, and the rest is the alloy. Benchmark Gold pays based on the karat purity weight of the gold.

How is Gold Tested?

Benchmark Gold takes the process of testing your gold or jewelry very seriously. We use a combination of three hands-on testing processes to accurately test your gold.

Magnetic and Stamping Tests

This is the first simple step one our professional staff will perform. They will gauge the overall composition of your items with simple magnets to ensure an understanding of the basic make-up of the metals with a follow-up review of the karat stamping. It's important to keep in mind at this stage that precious metals vary greatly in quality. Some are plated or filled, some are solid, and there are many combinations of metals. We'll talk you through this process as we perform it.

Scratch Testing

Scratch testing is the second step in determining the highest price to be paid for your gold. At Benchmark Gold, we scratch test using 10 karat, 14 karat, 18 karat, and 24 karat testing pens with a gold-specific acid solutions corresponding to each karat level. After scratching your jewelry, comparing with acid, and comparing scratches from the pens, Benchmark Gold can determine precisely and quickly what kind of gold you have and how much we can pay.

Weighting

This is the final step. Once we have determined the quality of you gold, silver, or platinum we will weigh it right in front of you and tell you what we will pay for it. There is no waiting, no mailing, and no mystery with our process. At any point you can decide that you don't want to go through with it. The choice is yours. We respect that it is your decision and stand by our payments as the best in industry.
